This area is known as a perched swamp white oak forest. This community is defined by swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) as the dominant tree and an unusual hydrology resulting from groundwater “perched” atop shallow clay and bedrock. This community is rare in Tompkins County. The pipes you see on either side of the trail are groundwater monitoring wells used to study the movement, distribution, and quality of water.
